G is for Genre

Since, I like to have discussions on this blog and the A-Z challenge is quickly becoming a never-ending episode of the 'Melissa Show', I wonder how you would answer these questions:

1. If you could only choose one genre to read for the rest of your life what would that genre be?

I would choose literary fiction. I have always gravitated towards character driven stories. I don't mind stories that are hard to read or that make me think. And when I write, I am most interested in exploring complex relationships between people and the emotional journies we take through life. I enjoy many genres, but when I walk into the bookstore, there are certain kinds of literary fiction books I immediately want to devour. The realistic ones. Books about people and the things they do.

2 What is a genre you rarely read but wish you read more of?

For me, it would be memoir. When I do sit down to read an interesting memoir, I can not put it down. As I've said above, I like true-life stories, so it's no wonder that this a genre that appeals to me. I hope to read more of it.

I'm curious to hear your answers! :-)

  1. 1. Humour - any genre, I like a wry approach to life, not necessarily guffaws but an appreciation of the absurdities.
    2. Classics of literature.

  2. 1. I love contemp fiction, so anything that falls under that category.

    2. Um...this one is hard! Right now, I'm going to say sci-fi. Sometimes breaking the laws of science confuses me, but I've read some really fascinating sci-fi in the past, so I need to stop shying away from it.

  3. Ooh interesting answers!

    1. I'd also choose to read fiction for the rest of my life. I like the idea of being taken away to far off places with totally different people. In fiction, more or less anything is possible.

    2. I would like to read more non fiction. I'd be interested to read about events that have happened in history and learn more about people in general.

It's really difficult to pick to choose only one genre for each question. Great Post.

  4. I feel like my A to Zs are an Allison Show, too! =)

And not to be cheap, but I'm agreeing with your answers. Sometimes I like reading quick, entertaining stories, but I love the depth and beautiful language in a truly wonderful literary fiction novel.

I love memoirs, but maybe I should broaden that to creative nonfiction. I love reading ABOUT people (usually authors, musicians, or creative folk) but I also love books about a journey, like Scratch Beginnings or Street Gang.

  7. Literary fiction would be my choice, too.

Diaries are what I should like to read more of ... and letters between people. I find those fascinating and feel as if I have crept into the life of the person writing.

A good choice of subject for your post.

  8. If I had to choose one it would have to be the novel...fiction.

  10. I really enjoy contemprary ya fiction, but love historical fiction too. I enjoy humorous books too, but don't read enough of them. I recently read a couple of the Wimpy Kid books. OMGoodness they are soooooo funny!

  11. Picture books and MG novels, because that is what I write.

Romance. UGH! :-) I just can't get into that kissy, kissy stuff. Though I have read some. I know some writers in our blogosphere that write it. And I've read some of theirs, just not the real juicy junk. Jack's voice spoke in a rich and seductive tone as he watched Linda, her hair wrapped in a towel, wearing a short bathrobe. UGH!

  12. The term "literary fiction" it can mean different things to different people and covers a lot of different genres. Keeping that in mind, I would have to pick historical fiction. It's may favorite. Although I am glad I don't have to pick just one. LOL!

I would like to read more dystopian. The few I have read, I have enjoyed.

  13. I would choose literary fiction for sure. Lots of variety in that genre. And for question two, I'd like to read more non-fiction, specifically, biographies.
