The Inconvenience of Being

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I've been thinking a lot about the ways we are in touch with one another, the ways we connect. Through an email, a tweet, a call, a text.  It comes in and a choice is made. To respond immediately.  Or later.  Or never.  It has become easy to dismiss a person, to save them for another time, to have them when it is convenient.

I wonder about the permanence of sitting beside someone.  The possibility of silence.  A word that falls before I can catch it. The vulnerability of a me that can not be constructed.

As a writer, I always want to arrange story in a way that makes sense.  I never want to be a stutter, an interruption, a bother.  But I also know we can take one another to the river, at sunset, that we can stand beneath ribbons of color, and still not be kissed.

It is not convenient to love or be loved.

I'm fearful of convenience.

  2. What a lovely post, " I never want to be a stutter, an interruption, a bother. But I also know we can take one another to the river, at sunset, that we can stand beneath ribbons of color, and still not be kissed"
    beautiful phrasing.

  3. A lovely, lovely post. And I am struck by the same line as Linda: "It is not convenient to love or be loved." A very good one to remember. It is so very easy to be irritated with the people most close to you, simply because they inconvenience you: The teenager needs a ride. The tween has spilled milk on the floor. The husband left the phone somewhere and you can't find it.

All things that should be promptly dismissed, so that you don't miss the opportunity to kiss beneath a ribbon of color.

  4. Your posts just blow me away. I love how you think of things, and even more how you write them to share with us.

On a secretive, girly-girl note, I love that you posted this on the same day as my waterfalls, because... "But I also know we can take one another to the river, at sunset, that we can stand beneath ribbons of color, and still not be kissed."

  5. It isn't convenient which is what makes a lasting love that much more uncommonly beautiful. Especially these days, we hate to be inconvenienced, it's rush, rush, rush, now, now now...I don't want to be a bother or stutter in anyone's life either, just one long lovely line of beautiful. I'm sure that's exactly how my husband would describe me - ha :)
